On the evening of Wednesday 20 July, 20 members of the St Nicholas Parish Mothers' Union including Becky Leach (minister at St Mary's, Kinsbourne Green) visited the Chaplaincy at Luton Airport, and were welcomed by the full time Senior Chaplain, the Rev Michael Banfield, and his wife Linda.
The main work of the ecumenical team is to be of help when needed by the staff of the airport companies, the aircrew and the passengers, of which there were more than 9 million last year. The airport is owned by Luton Borough Council and the work is part funded by Workplace Ministry. The aim of the chaplaincy is to identify, understand and share in the issues and concerns that affect staff and passengers at the airport - to listen, support and encourage. The Chapel has a calm and welcoming atmosphere and is open from 04.00 - 23.00 daily. The Chapel contains artwork and symbols reflecting its multi-faith nature. |
There is also an Airside Multi-faith Prayer Room and office. The facilities are available to those of all faiths and none. One aspect, for which simulation traininmg takes place each year, is to provide special support in the event of a major incident or aircraft accident.
The Chaplain gave examples of how the team is able to provide help to those in difficulty such as arriving in the UK with valid papers but without valid contact information for which they have paid dearly. The Chaplaincy has a small budget which can provide immediate help such as paying for the bus fare to their country's embassy or consulate in London. The fascinating talk gave rise to many questions since the group knew little of the extent of the outreach happening on our doorstep.
